Unit 2: Force, Motion, and Energy

As you are making your presentation, here are a few things to include:

Force:

At least three everyday examples: Swings, Teeter totter, Tug o' War, Bicycle, etc.

Energy:

How does energy change into useable forms? Flashlights, Pencil Sharpeners, Bikes, Hair Dryers, Toasters, etc.

Motion:

Give examples of each of the three laws. Film them. Remember to make them easy enough for a third grader to understand.

Also, what is a simple machine? How do they work?

Gravity and Friction:

What would life be like with less gravity? More gravity?

How does friction affect our everyday lives? Does it make sense to increase or decrease friction on the bottom of your shoes or on tires? What are some other examples of friction? Brakes, street surfaces.

What would life be like without friction??

I will be using the best of these to create an iBook. Do your best!!!

Matter Matters!!

Okay, you will be working with your group today to define four words that we are still struggling with. Mass, Volume, Density, and Matter (the phases and particle arrangements). You need to draw, describe, and label your poster. Remember to use this as an opportunity to prepare for the test on Friday. Please use the following resources:

Last Project

It's the last few weeks and we need to get the fourth graders ready to be fifth graders. Your job will be to create a presentation that will explain to them how to be successful in fifth grade. What are the things that you learned this year that were hard?? How did you learn them?? What were strategies you learned?? What are they? If you could get into a time machine and visit yourself last year, what would you tell yourself? How would you explain to pass fifth grade? Be original!!! Have fun, and we will miss you!!!!

IBook

The words below are the ones that need to be included in your book. Remember, this needs to be ORIGINAL!! You cannot cut and paste things from the internet!! You need to explain these concepts!! You will be adding to this book throughout the next month.

Words and concepts to be included:
Delta
Canyon
Sand Dune
Erosion
Weathering
Deposition

Volcano
Earthquake
Tsunami
Landslide
Hurricane
Tornado ( remember, tornadoes DO NOT form every time warm and cold air meet. They form when that happens and other variables are present)

Do your best and be creative!!!

Scenarios!

There has been a global tragedy and the world’s power grid has been neutralized.  There is no more energy available from fossil fuels.
You and everyone in the world are without power.
The government has collapsed and local villages have emerged.
You have been appointed leader of your village.
You live in a village on the side of a mountain. Your terrain is very hilly and there are many trees. There is a river flows down from the mountain through the middle of the village.
Your first job is to secure a power source for your community. Without it you will perish.

You live in a village with fertile soil that receives ample sunlight and rain. Much of the food that was consumed in the United States was grown in this area.

Welcome Back!!!!

I trust everyone had a good break. I myself conducted multiple experiments on the golf course. However, there were too many variables. My conclusion is that I must work harder in order to beat Tiger Woods.

We will be studying the Earth, our home sweet home. The Earth has many cycles. We learned about some of them within Ecosystems, but this is just a small piece of the puzzle. Remember that some changes on Earth happen so slowly, that you would not be able to notice it. For example, the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon took millions of years to look the way it does now, and it is not finished. It is still changing. Our job will be to figure out what causes the changes on Earth. Some are fast and obvious, while others are slow.

The first thing we are going to look at is renewable and alternative energy sources.
